Country-Gospel und Kirchenlieder aus dem Buch, von dem Johnny Cash seine Liebe zur Musik entdeckt hat - was das Coverphoto zeigt, ist über 80 Jahre alt und heißt "Heavenly Highway Hymns". Diese Platte wollte er immer machen, aber es fand sich selten der richtige Zeitpunkt. Cash, der schon in den Sechzigern ein "Hymn"-Album bei Columbia durchgesetzt hat, war lebenslang gläubig. Durch June Carter fand er aus seiner Drogensucht heraus, eben auch, weil sie ihn mit in die Kirche nahm.

Die Songs werden nur durch Cashs Gitarre begleitet, sind aber ganz in seinem typischen Countrystil. Warm und ruhig gesungen, dabei teils stark im Blues verwurzelt ("Do Lord") - diese Platte ist ein Klassiker - zeitlich eingerahmt durch die American-Serie.
