Das RHCP-Album mit den stärksten Funkbezügen überhaupt. Bei dem nur 0:36 kurzen "Lovin' And Tochin'" kann man die spätere Vorliebe von Anthony Kiedis für Balladen erkennen, wie sie auf "By The Way" perfektioniert werden wird.

Mit einem Bein im Hardcore, mit dem anderem im Thrash. Coole Songs sind der Opener "Suicidal Maniac" und der Titeltrack "Join The Army". Hat eine Menge gute Ansätze, aber die Songs in der Mitte entwickeln einen ziemlich breiigen Sound. Was für die Produktion von Uptempo-Punkrock "You Got, I Want", "Human Guinea Pig" gereicht hatte, wirkt bei den Metalsongs vor allem bei den typischen Metalriffgegniedel auch noch ziemlich dünn. Der Song "The Prisoner" hat zudem eine schwache La-la-la-Melodie, Mike Muir klingt wie ein totaler Anfänger. Zum Glück wird die nächste Produktion "How Will I Laugh..." endlich ganz konkret auf den (Thrash)-Punkt gebracht.
